Fraud Alert: Whiteside County Sheriff's Report Print E-mail
Wednesday, 30 June 2010 11:20

Whiteside County Sheriff Kelly Wilhelmi is advising County residents that there is currently a fraudulent telephone campaign using the Illinois Sheriff’s Association in their solicitation.

The Illinois Sheriff’s Association never solicits by phone, but does conduct direct mail campaigns throughout the State of Illinois.  These direct mailings are endorsed by Sheriff Wilhelmi for Whiteside County.

Frauds like the one described above, are all too common and cost citizens billions of dollars every year in the United States.  Offers that are “ to good to be true” are just that.

Unfortunately, these scam artists ruin it for the legitimate organizations.  If you feel compelled to donate money to law enforcement, please do it locally.  Every police agency in Whiteside County could use these funds for a multitude of programs that help our citizens.  This way, you know your dollars remain in the community.

Remember these tips to protect yourself against fraud.

  • Never give out personal financial information over the phone or internet.
  • Ask for informational materials to be sent to you before purchasing anything over the phone.  Legitimate businesses will send them.
  • Protect your personal identity by shredding old bank and credit card statements.
  • Never pay anyone for services that you did not authorize.
  • It is OK to say” No thank you” and hang-up on a telemarketer.
  • Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it is.

If you believe that someone is trying to con or scam you, please report it to your local police agency.  Seniors are urged to contact:  Whiteside County “Seniors vs. Crime” at 815-772-5222.
