The 2010 Morrison Mustangs attended an off-season 7-on-7 Tournament in East Peoria, IL, on Saturday, July 24, 2010, which included a Lineman Challenge. The Offensive and Defensive Backs played a set of five games against five worthy opponents: Illini West, Rochester, Camp Point, Chillicothe IVC, and Dunlap. The Offensive and Defensive Lineman competed in various strength and agility challenges, against an open field of 37 teams that spanned all eight classes of the Illinois High School Association.
Senior Wide Receiver/Defensive Back Nick Volckmann said, “We played well for this early in the season, and I think that things are going pretty well so far.” Volckmann, who looks to earn a starting spot on the defense this year, has made tremendous progress over the summer and looks to be a key ingredient to the Mustangs' 2010 campaign. Volckmann, shown left, and Senior Corner Back Bryce Vegter, at center, drop back into pass coverage during the 7-on-7.
Also getting into the mix was Freshman Quarterback/Defensive Back Tylr Dolan, who said, “It was neat seeing the difference between Jr. Tackle and High School Football.” Dolan took advantage of the opportunity to play against older kids this weekend; he seemed pleased with his results.
Two individuals who were pulling double duty this past weekend were Jr. Offensive Lineman/Linebacker Matt McDonnell, center, and Jr. Offensive Lineman/Linebacker Logan Kuehl, at right. McDonnell thought that he has the best of both worlds and, although it was draining, the tournament was a good experience for himself. His counter-part Kuehl said, “It was tiring, but rewarding, to see the team working really hard this summer.
Sr. Offensive Lineman/Defensive Lineman Colton Sedig, who participated in all but one of the Lineman events, said, “It was fun, and we really had to step it up from last year. We didn’t have the size of most teams, but speed and strength worked to our advantage.” He is shown running through an agility course.
Coach Cory Bielema, wearing the cap, was coaching all week for the Illinois East/West All-Star game. He was able to take time away and join the Mustangs for their first two games. Filling in for the rest of the afternoon were Assistant Coaches Gregg Dolan and Duane Shaffer.
"It was a good day, the guys play hard, a lot of kids got a lot of opportunities and reps to show what they have,” said Coach Shaffer about the production of the team.
After the long day at the East Peoria Sports Complex, the Mustangs' consensus was that it is nice to know that the work they have put in over the summer has panned out. To go down to this Tournament and compete with schools that are twice their size gives them confidence and realization that they can compete with the best schools that are their own size.
