American Red Cross Blood Drive

March is Red Cross Month, and the American Red Cross has an incentive to attract donors on Tuesday, March 19, 2013.  Each person who attempts to donate will receive a $5 Subway gift card.  The event will be held at Morrison United Methodist Church, 200 W. The History of Lent by Fr. William Sanders

The following seasonal essay was submitted by Betty L. Hintt of Morrison, IL.

The word Lent itself is derived from the Anglo-Saxon words lencten, meaning "Spring"and lenetentid, which literally means not only "Springtide" but also was the word for "March," the month in which the majority of Lent falls.

Over the years I've heard different ones speak of giving up something for Lent.  When I was in school, one said candy had been given up.  But then some was taken.  Being me, I said, "Now you'll have to go to confession."  As an adult I heard another say that candy had been given up.  I once asked a man of the cloth if their church believed in giving up [something] for Lent.  The answer was he'd have to give up his wife.  Quite obviously, none of these people understood that giving up meant to get rid of permanently.
