Mustangs and Fillies take on Prince of Peace

On Saturday, January 8, The Mustangs and Fillies hosted Prince of Peace High School, from Clinton, Iowa, for an action packed night. The Girls started the night, and played a great game, and when it was the boy’s turn, much of the same great action was seen, but to a different end result.

The girls started out the game very strong, taking a 9-0 lead over the Irish, but a great defense and strong offense, including a three pointer by Abby Vock, led the fillies to a 10 point lead, 18-8, at the end of the first quarter. Early in the second quarter, Amanda Smith got a steal and took it to add another 2 points, starting a great scoring run by the Fillies. With 2 minutes to go in the half, the score was 30-10, but the Lady Irish came back, scoring 10 points in the final 2 minutes. The score going into the half was 38-20.

In the second half, mush of the same was seen from the Fillies, with a lot of scoring and a strong defense. At the end of the third, the Fillies’ defense let up slightly, letting the Lady Irish score 14 points total in the third. The Score at the end of the third came out to be 56-34, with the Fillies still in a commanding position. In the fourth, the Fillies continued to perform, and put in the second string early in the 4th. The final score of the game was 77-49.

In the Boys game, the first points came from a free throw by the Irish, setting a precedent for a game riddled with fouls. Morrison took their first lead with a lay-up by Tony Damhoff, but the Irish fought back again, taking the lead. The Mustangs held tight to Prince of Peace for most of the first quarter, but a lot of fouls and a few breakaway shots left the Mustangs in the dust at the end of the quarter with a score of 25-6. In the second Quarter, the Mustangs came climbing back, but still were not able to make significant progress at taking the lead. The Mustangs went into the locker room at the half down by 19 with a score of 39-20.

Going into the third quarter, the Irish came out strong, but so did the Mustangs. Morrison pulled to within 13 about halfway through the quarter, but a lot of progress at digging out of the deficit was hindered by Prince of Peace stalling whenever they got the ball. The score was 31-44 at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth, Morrison was crushed for the first few minutes, with the Irish putting up 10 points to Morrison’s 2. Later, Morrison took out the starters, and the second string did very well. Doug Vandermyde put up 4 points, Rustin Lindsey put up 2, and Austin Rickels put up a 3 pointer at the buzzer to put the final score at 56-45.
