4-H Members Compete for 2008 Communication Contest Honors

Whiteside County 4-H members competed for top honors at the recent 4-H Communications contest held on Monday, February 18th in Morrison. Each spring 4-H members are invited to participate in the Communications Contest, which showcases a diversity of 4-H members speaking talents.

Through participation in the Whiteside County Communications Contest, 4-H members can qualify for the Illinois State Fair Communications competition. Krista Temple was selected in the area of foods demonstrations as State Fair Delegate. Danielle Cooney, Brittany Dykstra, Kelly Holland, Kaylie Huizenga and Kaleb Medema were selected in the area of public presentations as State Fair Delegates.

The Communications Contest competitors presented the following: Michael Benson, son of Eric and Mary Benson of Morrison, is a member of the Cottonwood 4-H Club. His Extempore Speech was “Explain which came first: the chicken or the egg?” Ashley Cooney, daughter of Tom and Joan Cooney of Deer Grove, is a member of the Hume Happy Hustlers 4-H Club. Her Foods Demonstration was on “My Pyramid Sundae.” Catherine Cooney, daughter of Tom and Joan Cooney of Deer Grove, is a member of the Hume Happy Hustlers 4-H Club. Her Food Demonstration was the “Breakfast Bread.” Danielle Cooney, daughter of Tom and Joan Cooney of Deer Grove, is a member of the Hume Happy Hustlers 4-H Club. Her Demonstration was on “Sweet Dreams.” Brittany Dykstra, daughter of Dan and Tina Dykstra of Morrison, is a member of the Garden Plain Ripsnorters 4-H Club. Her Illustrated Speech was “Diabetes.”

Kelly Holland, daughter of James and Roxanne Holland of Fulton, is a member of the Fulton 4-H’ers. Her Extempore Speech was on “Should the driving age be increased from 16 to 18 years of age?” Kaylie Huizenga, daughter of Tom and Kristi Huizenga of Morrison, is a member of the Garden Plain Ripsnorters 4-H Club. Her Formal Speech was “Barbaro.” Kaleb Medema son of George and Sharon Medema of Prophetstown, is a member of the Leon Wide Awakes. His Oral Interpretation was “The Raven.” Karl Miller, son of Lynn and Kris Miller of Prophetstown, is a member of the Leon Stickers. His Formal Speech was “The Effects of Cloning in the Beef Industry.” Brandi Pessman, daughter of Jeff and Jackie Pessman of Fulton, is a member of the Garden Plain Ripsnorters. Her Deomonstration was on “The Way to Crochet.” Breanna Sandrock, daughter of Ben and Traci Sandrock of Tampico, is a member of the Hume Happy Hustlers. Her Formal Speech was “How to Show Angus Cattle.” Krista Temple, daughter of Don and Karen Temple of Fulton, is a member of the Garden Plain Ripsnorters. Her Food Demonstration was “Mice Holiday Medely.” Amber Vegter, daughter of Tim and Jill Vegter of Morrison, is a member of the Garden Plain Ripsnorters. Her Formal Speech was “The Camp.”
