Whiteside County Sheriff John F. Booker reported, “The Sheriff’s Office has initiated an internal investigation, regarding the possible misuse of the Flock camera system, by a member of the Sheriff’s Office.
“The matter was brought to my attention after the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by a reporter with The Washington Post and provided information concerning the use of the Flock camera system. Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office takes this matter very seriously. Upon receiving this information, I immediately directed that an internal investigation be initiated to determine the facts, and whether any Sheriff’s Office policies, procedures, or other applicable rules were violated.
“The Deputy involved has been placed on Administrative Leave while the investigation is conducted. Administrative Leave is not a determination of wrongdoing, and the investigation remains active and ongoing.
“The Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office does not own or operate its own Flock cameras. However, members of the Sheriff’s Office have had access to Flock camera information maintained by other Law Enforcement agencies. As a precaution, I have suspended the use of the Flock camera system by Sheriff’s Office personnel, while this matter is being reviewed.
“Law Enforcement technology can be an important investigative tool, when used properly and for legitimate Law Enforcement purposes. The public should also expect that these tools will be used responsibly and in accordance with applicable policies and laws.
“Because this is an active personnel investigation, the Sheriff’s Office will not release the name of the Deputy or additional details that could compromise the integrity of the investigation. Additional information will be released when appropriate.”
